Host a Grapplethon

Independently Organized Cancer Fighting Events

Tap Cancer Out may have been born from one person’s idea, but it’s become a movement that belongs to the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu community as a whole. In order to create impact beyond our tournament fundraising efforts, we depend on volunteers (like you!) around the world to host Tap Cancer Out Grapplethons to unite the grapplers in your area (and beyond) to help bring humanity another step closer to tapping cancer out.

Frequently Asked Questions
What’s a Grapplethon?
A Grapplethon can be many things. At its core it is a multi-hour event where grapplers can get together and train in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. A popular format features mini-seminars (30-40 minutes) taught by upper belts interspersed with rolling sessions and breaks for food, giveaways and fun.Why host one on behalf of Tap Cancer Out?
There are two elements of a TCO Grapplethon that sets it apart from other charitable BJJ events you may have seen:

  1. Fundraising Perks: While competitors may pay a door fee, they are encouraged to fundraise using our state-of-the-art fundraising platform where they can earn perks including free entry to the event, exclusive t-shirts, rashguards, hoodies, and even a free gi!
  2. You don’t have to go it alone: You’ll have the full support of Tap Cancer Out—we’ll set up your event page on our fundraising platform, print the posters, connect with our sponsors to send gear for you to raffle, and much more. Plus we’ve got a downloadable volunteer toolkit with all the vital information and paperwork you’ll need.

Can anyone volunteer to host a Grapplethon?
Absolutely. Whether you’re a black belt school owner or a white belt with three months experience, as long as you have the passion to create real change (and a place to host it, of course) then we’ll be happy to work with you to put on a successful event.

How do we raise money?
Fundraising for Grapplethons is usually split between online fundraising (before the event), entry fees, and raffles (both day-of the event). Most attendees will never have fundraised online (or fundraised at all) before, but that’s fine. Our platform is super easy to use and navigate, and comes good-to-go out of the box (plus we’ll be sending emails with tips and tricks to optimize fundraising along the way).

Where do our funds go?
Tap Cancer Out is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. All funds donated are tax-deductible and benefit our 2016-2017 beneficiary, the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCan). In 2016 we donated $210,000 to PanCan and have committed in 2017 to fund a $300,000 translational research grant. Ultimately our goal is to help them double the pancreatic cancer survival rate by 2020 (it already rose 1% from 8-9% in 2016!). You can read more about all of our financials in our Annual Report.

Because we are a 501(c)(3), funds raised at our events and on our fundraising platform must be used for either Tap Cancer Out expenses or donated to our designated beneficiary. A Tap Cancer Out Grapplethon can not fund a local or individual cause. If you’d like to host your own Grapplethon for a purpose like helping pay for someone’s medical bills, then our platform can’t be used. However, definitely download our toolkit and use the tips to host your own event.

Is it just limited to my school?
Absolutely not. The spirit of a Tap Cancer Out Grapplethon is to unite the BJJ community to create change, so we strongly encourage that all schools are welcome and that politics are left at the door.

Brands You Can Count On for Support
One of the great parts of Grapplethons is the raffle items and swag, am I right? Well as a TCO Grapplethon Host, you already know that you’re going to get packages full of goodies not only from Tap Cancer Out but also Inverted Gear and Armour Kimonos. Plus we’ll be reaching out to other potential sponsors on an event-by-event basis.
