2014 Tap Cancer Out Spring BJJ Open

See you Saturday!

Brackets will be posted on Friday.

Tap Cancer Out is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to raising awareness and funding for cancer-fighting organizations on behalf of the grappling community. On April 26th, 2014, we’ll be hosting our third annual Spring Tap Cancer Out BJJ Open fundraising tournament with this year’s beneficiary organization being the St. Baldrick’s Foundation which is helping to end pediatric cancer. Read more about our partnership here.

If you’ve never heard of our tournaments, they are one-of-a-kind, to say the least. Instead of just paying to compete, tournament competitors can compete for FREE by fundraising on behalf of Tap Cancer Out and our beneficiary. Plus, the more you fundraise, the more prizes you can earn from our generous sponsors. This is on top of taking part in an incredibly well-organized and positive event.

So at this tournament, you’re fighting for more than just your sport, your school, your team and yourself. You’re fighting for others—those who are in the fight of their lives.

At the Tap Cancer Out BJJ Open, fundraisers who hit a fundraising minimum compete for FREE. After pre-registering, if you set up a fundraising page on our fundraising platform, you have the opportunity to not only earn a complimentary tournament registration, but awesome BJJ gear like shirts, rashguards, patches, DVDs and Gis from Inverted Gear, Digitsu, Lapel Choke, Tap Cancer Out and more!

Plus, we’ll be rewarding our top 5 fundraiser with some amazing prizes along with a Grand Prize for the year’s top fundraiser!

FUNDRAISERS: If you are confident you will reach $250, then choose the Pay-at-Door option. However, if you don’t reach at least $250, you will be subject to the higher entry fees of $60/$80. If you pay online but reach your goal, you will be reimbursed your entry fee after the tournament (you must compete to be reimbursed).

In order to ensure that this tournament runs smoothly, it’s imperative that you ARRIVE ON TIME. Even if you have pre-registered, we WILL NOT DELAY ANY DIVISION if you have not showed up. When the division is scheduled to go, we will start it.

The morning will start promptly at 10:30 with all Gi divisions. The afternoon will feature No-Gi.

ALL GI DIVISIONS (Black, Brown, Purple, Blue and White belts, male and female) should be registered and weighed in by 9:30 am. We will have a rules meeting and awards at 10:00am and start promptly thereafter.

ALL NO-GI COMPETITORS, regardless of belt, must be weighed in by no later than 1:30pm. We will close the scales promptly at 1:30pm. If you have weighed in for Gi, you do not have to weigh in twice.

The tournament will be hosted in the main gymnasium of Bunnell High School, 1 Bulldog Blvd, Stratford, CT, 06614. Simply go through the main entrance and into the main lobby and you’ll see the registration table. ALL COMPETITORS must check in with the table and sign a waiver.

When approaching the school grounds by car, there are two entrances. Each will have signs for the tournament. You can see a map of the high school with notations of entrances, parking, and main lobby by clicking here.

Bunnell High School: 1 Bulldog Blvd, Stratford, CT 06614 385-4250

I-95 South to Merritt Pkwy. Exit 52 (Rt. 8/Rt. 108), which exits to the right. Immediately you will come to a fork in the ramp – bear left, following the sign toward Bridgeport. When you come to a second fork in the ramp, bear right, taking the exit to Stratford, Rt. 108. At the end of this ramp, turn left at the light. Follow approx. 1.3 miles. At the third light (Connors Lane), turn left. Drive about ½ a mile, turning left onto Weaver Drive to enter the school’s parking lot.

I-95 North: Exit 32 off 95 (Broad St.). At end of ramp go through the light, following the circle around to your left. After going under the I-95 bridge, take your first right. At the stop sign, take a left under a railroad bridge. You will be on King St. and will pass Stratford High School’s softball fields. At the intersection of King and Barnum, go through the light, which slightly angles to the left. You will now be on Nichols Ave. Follow for approx. 1.5 miles and at the second light (Connors Lane) take a right. Drive about ½ mile, turning left onto Weaver Drive to enter the Bunnell High School parking lot.

Merritt Pkwy North: Take exit 51 (Rt. 108). Take a right at end of ramp onto Nichols Ave (Rt. 108). Follow approx. 1.5 miles. At the 4th light (Connors Lane), turn left. Drive about ½ mile, turning left onto Weaver Drive to enter the Bunnell High School parking lot.

Every competitor is encouraged to go to our fundraising website to set up their own fundraising page. Any competitor who raises at least $250 will earn a complimentary registration into the Tap Cancer Out BJJ Open (one or two divisions). YOU MUST PRE-REGISTER FOR THE TOURNAMENT. Setting up a fundraising page does not constitute a registration for the tournament (how would we know what division to put you in?).

The more you fundraise, the more prizes you earn from Tap Cancer Out and our sponsors! Our goal this year is to surpass $50,000, so we need your help!

After you register for the tournament, head over to our fundraising platform to learn more and get started.

Our weight classes are slightly different from IBJJF and other tournaments, so please read carefully! For Gi divisions, the competitor does not have to weigh in with Gi on. You only have to weigh in once. Weigh ins are only available on the day of the tournament, starting at 8am.

**Divisions may be altered/combined/moved at the tournament director’s discretion! We will do our best to get you a match in your proper weight and division.

Can I register at the door? No.
Are there kids divisions?
At this time we can not accomodate kids. We hope to change that in the very near future.
What happens if I don’t have anyone in my division? You will have an option to switch divisions or get your money back right there on the spot. Do note that we reserve the right to combine divisions to make for a more compelling bracket.
Are jockstraps/cups allowed?
Are uniform rules in effect? The Gi will need to be properly sized, however there are no restrictions on brand, colors or patches. You may NOT wear any shirt or rashguard under your Gi top if you are a male. Ranked rashguards are not required for No-Gi. Shorts with no pockets are required for No-Gi.
Can teens compete as adults? Yes. They must be 16+ and have a parent/guardian who can sign a waiver on their behalf in attendance.
I signed up for the wrong weight/division. Can I switch? Yes, just email us, but Wednesday, April 23rd is the LAST DAY to make changes.
