We are thrilled to return to sunny San Diego for our FOURTH year to host our annual San Diego Charity BJJ Open on Saturday, January 13th, 2018. We’ve grown so much that this year we’ll be stretching our legs and moving to a bigger venue — San Diego State University — in their Aztec Recreation Fieldhouse.
Divisions will include Adults Male/Female, Masters Male (30+ for White/Blue/Purple belt MALES ONLY), Teens (12-13, 14-15), Juniors (8-9, 10-11), and Kids (4-5, 6-7).
PARENTS PLEASE NOTE: To give our younger competitors as many matches as possible, girls and boys in Kids/Juniors/Teens divisions will be COMBINED and their divisions will be round robin.
This tournament is PRE-REGISTRATION ONLY! We will not be accepting any new registrants at the door, and registration closes the Tuesday before the tournament. Don’t wait for the last minute, register today and start fundraising to compete for free!
This is a GI-ONLY event. Our top fundraisers and fundraising teams will be recognized and awarded, and all fundraisers will be eligible for raffle prizes from our great sponsors. Join us!
Watch our short explainer video below to better understand what we’re all about and how to get involved in our tournaments:
We recently received word that all competitors will need to sign an additional waiver specific to the use of the SDSU facilities. We will have plenty on hand at the tournament for you to sign when you check in.
If you are a parent who can not be with your child who is a minor (under 18) PLEASE DOWNLOAD, PRINT, AND FILL OUT the youth waiver linked below. The competitor may bring it with them to the tournament. If you’re simply dropping off a competitor, please come in with them to sign the waiver.
The period for changes has closed and the final competitor list has been sent to our bracketing organizer. If you need to withdraw, please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.

Tap Cancer Out is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charity organization founded in 2011 that unites the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu community around a cause: ending cancer. We achieve this by hosting the most philanthropic BJJ tournaments in the world. All our proceeds are given to our beneficiary organizations, which has resulted in over $525,000 donated to our beneficiaries. If you’ve never heard of our tournaments, they are one-of-a-kind, to say the least. Instead of just paying to compete, tournament competitors can compete for FREE by fundraising on behalf of Tap Cancer Out and our beneficiary, Alex’s Lemonade Stand. Plus, the more you fundraise, the more prizes you can earn from our generous sponsors. This is on top of taking part in an incredibly well-organized and positive event.
At this tournament, you’re fighting for more than just your sport, your school, your team and yourself. You’re fighting for others—those who are in the fight of their lives.
Every competitor is encouraged to set up their own fundraising page which will be automatically created for them after registering for the tournament (regardless of what ticket category). Any competitor who raises at least $250 will earn a complimentary registration into the Tap Cancer Out BJJ Open. If you don’t reach the $250 minimum, you just pay the standard entry fee at the door (cash only). The more you fundraise, the more prizes you earn from Tap Cancer Out and our sponsors!
**Please note that donations will not be refunded if a competitor has fundraised but needs to withdraw from competing for any reason. However, the fundraising progress can be applied to a future tournament (in the same calendar year) or transferred to another teammate.
Aside from the free TCO gear, our top four fundraising individuals will also receive a free Tap Cancer Out branded Inverted Gear Gi! Our top fundraising team will be given a trophy, a 6ft banner to hang in their academy, and will be specially recognized at the tournament. On the day of the tournament we’ll be giving away cool prizes from other sponsors, so make sure you register to compete and start fundraising! Osss!!
First 500 competitors to arrive on the day of the tournament get one for FREE!
Because we will be welcoming a record number of competitors, we are segmenting the weigh-ins.
Check-in and weigh-ins for all competitors UNDER 16 YEARS OLD will start at 7:30am and go until 9:30am. Arriving on time will allow us to get all of your divisions organized and brackets set. PARENTS PLEASE NOTE, all kids, juniors and teens divisions will combine males and females to ensure we offer the most matches possible.
We will start promptly at 10:00am with a few awards and announcements. All Kids divisions will be first, followed by Juniors and Teens. When our schedule is posted, you’ll have more accurate start times.
Check-in and weigh-ins for all Adults and Masters will start at 9:30am and will remain open until 60-minutes before the final division. Adults will take place in the afternoon—please refer to the posted schedule for official times.
ALL ADULTS should be present, checked-in and weighed-in no later than 90 MINUTES before their division is scheduled to start. The scales will close at 60 minutes before the Adult White Belt divisions are scheduled to start.
Day-of weigh-ins only. You do NOT have to weigh in with your Gi. All competitors regardless of weight class need to be weighed-in.
We reserve the right to start a division up to 60 minutes early, which is why we require you to be present and weighed in 90-minutes ahead of time. You may not be used to tournaments running ahead of schedule, but we take pride in how efficiently we run. That said, we do our best to create an accurate schedule.
ALL COMPETITORS WILL RECEIVE A 1LB ALLOWANCE
Our weight classes are slightly different from IBJJF and other tournaments, so please read carefully! The competitor does not have to weigh in with Gi on. You only have to weigh in once. Weigh ins are only available on the day of the tournament, starting at 8am. Competitors will receive a 1lb weight allowance on top of the posted weight maximum to account for scale margin of error. **Divisions may be altered/combined/moved at the tournament director’s discretion! We will do our best to get you a match in your proper weight and division. If you don’t get a match you are guaranteed your money back. IMPORTANT KIDS/TEENS INFORMATION:
