San Diego – 2017

January 21st, 2017 | University of San Diego

On January 21st, 2017 we returned to the campus of the University of San Diego for our third-annual San Diego Tap Cancer Out BJJ Open. The southern-California BJJ community literally packed the gym as we welcomed nearly 450 competitors and hundreds more spectators and supporters.

Michael Phelps from Del Mar Jiu Jitsu earned the top fundraising award with exactly $4,000 raised. And for the third year running, Team Stronghold took home the Top Fundraising Team award with $9,454 raised. Mikey Talavera from Gracie South Bay took home our Michael Corb Top Children’s Fundraising award with $1,347 raised.

When all was said and done our 101 fundraisers and 852 generous donors helped us raise $45,635 in direct donations. In total, the tournament raised more than $66,000!

We live-streamed many of the adult matches including some fierce black belt matches. Head to our Facebook page to watch them, and take a peek at some special interviews we did with Clark Gracie (Clark Gracie BJJ) and Josh Hinger (Atos JJ).

Special thanks to our sponsors, including GrapplingX for providing the mats and promoting our event, Inverted Gear for providing kimonos to our top four fundraisers, Super Bowl Foods for setting up a delicious acai tent and giving away a bunch of free acai bowls, Armor Kimonos for providing a free kimono to our Instagram winner, and Jake Mosher for collecting a number of special items that we gave away to our fundraisers.

And although we don’t officially have team performance awards, congrats to Gracie South Bay for earning the most Adult points and Team Stronghold for earning the most Kids points.

Up next is our sixth-annual Connecticut Tap Cancer Out BJJ Open on April 29th!
